An Evening with Stephen Alvarez
Sewanee native Stephen Alvarez, photographer, filmmaker, and explorer, produces global stories about exploration, culture, religion, and the aftermath of conflict, and has served as a
National Geographic photographer since 1995. His images have won awards in Pictures of the Year International and Communications Arts and have been exhibited at Visa Pour L'Image International Photojournalism Festival in Perpignan, France.
Alvarez's most recent story for National Geographic explores why humans become artists. In 2017 he established the Ancient Art Archive, a worldwide effort to explore and preserve ancient artworks left by humanity's first ancestors. His recent discoveries and photographs include ancient drawings discovered in caves under the South Cumberland Plateau and in the surrounding region.
