Small nonprofits don’t just need funding. They also often require technical assistance, whether it’s setting up a website, creating a sound management structure, or learning how to make a budget. We call this assistance Capacity Building.
We believe one of the best ways to strengthen a community is by strengthening the nonprofit organizations in its area. The Capacity Building Program provides training and professional development for nonprofit board, staff members, and volunteers. A partnership between the Center for Non-profit Management in Nashville, with generous support from the Maddox Foundation, the Capacity Building Program was created to help strengthen these partner organizations so they can establish sustainability that will help continue the work of their mission and enhancing our communities.
A great part of the success of this program is the collaboration between the University of the South in Sewanee and the South Cumberland Community Fund that has resulted in the South Cumberland Plateau Americorps VISTA program. This joint effort, which began with the appointment of Nicky Hamilton to direct the VISTA program and SCCF's Capacity Building, has paid huge dividends in a very short time.
