Make a Difference Day of Service
Since 2017, South Cumberland Community Fund has partnered with the eight elementary schools on the Plateau to sponsor Make a Difference service day. In 2019, at the request of school leadership, Make A Difference Day was moved to late July so that families and community members could assist in preparing schools for the start of the academic year. on July 20, 2019 more than 400 volunteers showed up at schools across the region to assist in this community-wide effort.
This half-day, Plateau-wide event is devoted to projects that are deemed as needed by each school but often fall outside of school budgets. Projects have included creating and planting school gardens, painting inspiring murals in school spaces, organizing books and creating cozy reading spots in school libraries, building a bridge over a waterway on a school campus, constructing a covered bike rack, playground clean-up, coloring banners to welcome students and faculty back to school, and so much more.
The participating elementary schools include Coalmont, Monteagle, North, Palmer, Pelham, Sewanee, Swiss Memorial,
and Tracy City. Volunteers from the community and South Cumberland Plateau AmeriCorps VISTAs serve in both leadership and supporting roles to work with school communities to plan the day.
